Summary of an Article

Myself and Tanita worked together and chose the article ‘Young children who are smacked ‘go on to be more successful’’ by Daniel Martin. The article came from the Mail Online. The article talks about Marjorie Gunnoe who researched into this subject. She found that children that were smacked before the age of 6 did better at school when they became teenagers and that they were more likely to go to University and do volunteer work, whereas children that were not smacked before the age of 6 did not perform as well or go to University. However, the research also showed that the children who were smacked before the age 6 tended to show behavioural problems. The article goes on to say that Marjorie Gunnoe found that there was not enough evidence from the research to suggest that smacking harmed most children. The article then introduces Penelope Leach, who is a parenting guru, who disagrees with the research. She states that children who are smacked learn positive behaviour; she also states that nothing good can happen when smacking a child. The article also brings a psychologist called Aric Sigman in to the argument. Sigman says if smacking is done by a parent or parents who are sensitive and affectionate to their child then society should not be upset about smacking. This article presents both sides of the argument and shows some interesting research in to the issue of smacking children.
